Area and Location:
The upazila occupies an area of 485.26 sq. km. including 112.65 sq. km forest area .It is located between 24°08´ and 24°29´ north latitudes and between 91°45´ and 91°57´ east longitudes .The upazila is bounded on the north by Rajnagar upazila, on the east by Kulaura upazila and India, on the south by India and on the west by Sreemangal and Maulvibazar sadar upazila.

The Upazila consists of 1 paurashava, 9 wards, 29 mahallahs, 9 unions, 111 mauzas, and 251 villages. The average population of each ward, mahallah, union, mauza and villages are 1563, 485, 23954, 1942 and 859 respectively.
